In this article, the author presents the result of his case study on a customary institution in Nanggalo, a subdistrct in the Municipality of Padang, West Sumatra. The focus of this study is on the role of a Minangkabau customary institution known as Karapatan Adat Nagari [KAN] in fostering the values of tolerance which are necessary for a multiethnic life in Nanggalo. The author found among, others that KAN, along with other social and religious institutions, plays an important role in fostering and promoting the values of tolerance through various learning activities, including those which have been held in the places of religious worship, such as mosque and mushalla, as well as other social activities, including cultural festivals and night-wacth patrols. Another important finding is that while KAN is still functioning in providing customary services to the ethnic of Minang in Nanggalo, its role is now limited to certain aspects of life, especially concerning life...ifa.
