Qaryah Tayyibah, an alternative institution of education, surprises education pratitioners and experts in Indonesia. Mass media studies its strength and existence. The phenomena can be understood through two things. Firstly, the name of the education institution reflects Islamic institution Qaryah Tayyibah means good village. Secondly, it is assumed that through the existing formal education followed by Indonesia could not give as expected, therefore an alterantive education is needed. Firstly, it reflects as Islamic institution by naming 'Qaryah Tayyibah' which means good village. Secondly, it is assumed tat the existing formal education held by goverment do not give goodness and development and it is time to need alternative education and Qaryah Tayyibah is the answer. In its implementation Qaryah Tayyibah follows the view of education as freedom issued by western experts, therefore the construction of character toward its students looks free but more creative.
