Marriage [al nikah] in Islam has been defined simply as a contract that guarantees the legality of lady's private part [al farj]. A definition such as this, often tends to create problems of gender bias, for example women are considered to be ans are positioned just as satisfiers of male's lust. In fact, the implication of the definition is the emergence of nation that dowries [al mahr] given to wives is a reward of sexual pleasure. Based on the fact, it is necessary to redefine tha nation of al nikah. This study therefore attempts to explore definitions of marriage that have been written by Muslim scholars and tries to review definiton of marriage so that the meaning of marriage will be broader than just media to guarantee the legality of sexual intercourse. This study also emphasizes that in order to create peace and love in a family, duties and rights which are important elements in arriage, should be mentioned explicitly in the definition of al nikah.ifa.
