al Shafi'i represents the first jurist who conducted a syntheses between systematic ratio and revelation as the source of Islamic jurisprudence.In his ground-breaking work, al Risalah, while pushing the so-called traditionalists to accept aspects of rationality such as qiyas as a basis for argumentation. At the time of its emergence, however, this Shafi'i's syntheses appearred to be not quite attracting to the jurists. It was only in the hands of Ibn Jurayj that such a theory of syntheses became popular, and the compromise between the rationalists and traditionalists could be reached and implemented in a practical way. This is mainly because the two groups of jurists at that time made a consensus or compromise in delineating the principles of Islamic jurisprudence in order for them to maintain their own existence in the eyes of each other.yo.
