This research analyses the English competence among the Islamic and non - Islamic High School students accepted at the Faculty of Tarbiyah [Faculty of Islamic Education and Teachers Training] IAIN Raden Intan Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2004-2005. The study tries to examine the differences inEnglish competence between the two kinds of High School students and the factorsthat my contribute to the variation. The research finds out that the students from Islamic High School [MA] achieved higher score than those from non Islamic institution [non-MA]. The study also finds out that learning habits and academic setting and social environment are among the influential factors that may contribute to the students' academic success.yo.
